ASSOCIATION OF INSURANCE INSTITUTES OF THE CARIBBEAN (AIIC) |
Historically, Caribbean insurance industry players pursued primarily foreign examinations. However, as time progressed, the qualifications became more diffcult to attain, due, inter alia, to:
Prohibitive costs
Educational programmes catering mainly for the particular regions of origin rather than the international market.
It was further noted that while insurance education was being provided in some the regions, there was “…no standardisation with respect to the various programmes in operation…” and as such, an ideal situation would be “…a consolidation of education efforts among all the Institutes…so that the Education programme could be harmonized…”.
These and other issues catalysed the concept of the Association of Insurance Institutes of the Caribbean (AIIC). In 1982 representatives from three national institutes ( Barbados , Guyana , and Trinidad & Tobago) approved in principle its establishment .
The AIIC was ultimately established on September 11, 1989 by the Institutes of Barbados, Guyana , Jamaica , St. Lucia , and Trinidad & Tobago, with Mr. Michael Blades elected as its first President. The inaugural meeting was held in Antigua, at the Caribbean Insurance Conference, hosted by the Insurance Association of the Caribbean Inc (IAC).
At a subsequent meeting held in Jamaica in 1990, a mandate was given to Mr. Sherrif Khan (The Academy of Insurance in Trinidad and Tobago) and Mrs Elaina Gonzalves (Insurance College of Jamaica) to prepare a document on the implementation of a Caribbean Insurance Professional Qualification (CIPQ).
To date,"In Pursuit of Professional Excellence", there have been a number of developments regarding the AIIC, including education, formation of institutes, and education conferences.
The AIIC holds annual education conferences, the first was held in Trinidad and Tobago in 1997.
